Although Joseph Haydn and Hector Berlioz each belong to a completely diff erent style, the connection between them is more direct than it might seem. Haydn’s extraordinary personality influenced many of his contemporaries – even those who were later themselves among the greatest, such as Ludwig van Beethoven, whose work Berlioz studied during his youth. In the songs of Haydn and Berlioz, one finds similar concerns such as wandering, separation or spiritual questions. Another interesting dimension is not only their diverse musical but also poetic approach.
